Are new operators familiar with diesel forklift operation? Both experience and standard methods are essential for safe driving. Mastering complete operating procedures allows operators to work safely regardless of experience. Without proper operation standards, accidents may still happen even for seasoned staff. This article introduces the standard workflow for diesel forklift operation.

Pre-operation Inspection Walk around the truck to check tires for damage. Verify levels of diesel, engine oil, coolant and hydraulic oil, and confirm no fluid leakage. Check forks, mast and chains for deformation or looseness. Test lights, horn, service brake and handbrake. Clear obstacles in the working area.

Start-up and Warm-up Shift into neutral gear and engage the handbrake. In low-temperature environments, let the engine idle for 1–3 minutes after startup. Avoid repeated cranking and aggressive acceleration. Confirm no warning lights on the dashboard before starting work.

Load Handling Adjust fork spacing and insert forks centrally under the pallet. Lift the cargo 15–20 cm above the ground and tilt the mast slightly backward to lower the center of gravity. Never half-insert pallets or carry offset loads.

Travel & Transit Drive at low speed within the factory. Slow down and sound the horn before turning or approaching intersections. Travel forward uphill with heavy loads and reverse downhill. Never drive sideways on slopes. Do not lift or lower forks while traveling, and strictly forbid carrying passengers.

Stacking and Unloading Slowly approach the rack and align the truck. Raise forks to the required height, place goods steadily, pull out forks after confirming stable loading, lower the mast and drive away.

Parking and Shutdown Park on flat and safe ground. Lower forks fully to the floor and straighten the mast. Shift to neutral and engage the handbrake. Let the engine idle for cooling before turning off and cutting off power.

Extra Safety Notes for New Operators

Never overload or use offset loads. Overloading may cause forward tipping and accelerate hydraulic system damage.

Do not allow personnel to stand on forks for height work. The forklift is only for cargo transportation.

Avoid sharp turning and sudden braking. The high center of gravity may lead to side overturns under harsh operation.

Assign a dedicated guide when working in blind areas; do not move forward blindly.

Stop operation immediately if abnormal noise, oil leakage or weak braking occurs. Do not operate a faulty forklift.

Stick to regular maintenance. Lubricate chains and inspect the hydraulic system periodically to extend service life.

In short, how to operate diesel forklift is easy to learn. New operators can practice according to the above procedures. Feel free to contact us if you have further questions.
